As you may or may not know by now, I’m still not entirely sold on Second Life. That isn’t to say I don’t think there isn’t a future in 3-D virtual worlds - quite the contrary. But I still think the primary incentive for getting involved in SL projects is to prepare ourselves for the next “next big thing” to grow out of them.

So I was interested to take a peek at this slideshow and the video clips in it…  take a peek!!! And look at the accompanying article, too.)

It seems that I’m not alone in my sneaking suspicion that 3-D online worlds are here to stay.

(Of course, there are still some things that totally baffle me about the way these virtual environments are being used… but I think that’s a post for another day…..)

One Response to “3-D Virtual Worlds… Life after Second Life”

Thanks for sharing this, it was very interesting. About a month ago I decided I was going to figure out what second life was all about at a deeper level (more time) than I’d spent there before. So I went in, bought some Linden dollars, and started shopping…frankly, I had to have an Avatar that I liked and slightly resembles what I actually look like. About 10 hours of shopping later (my husband thought I’d lost my mind going online to shop for clothes for my avatar) and exploring, I got kinda bored. It didn’t help that second life seems to have some glitches and kicked me out numerous times.

So, for me, it wasn’t all that exciting — however, after messing around with it I was thinking it would be great if librarians could have avatars that look like themselves and we could all instantly meet in our own virtual worlds for training or conferences. So, it was cool to see how companies are using the 3-D world for training. I’m wondering if I did a conference presentation in a 3-D virtual environment, would it count as scholarship toward my tenure? ;)
